San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge History.
Supremely inspiring, the Golden Gate Bridge got its name from the part of San Francisco Bay that it crosses: the Golden Gate Strait. The 1.7 mile-long structure, which connects San Francisco with Marin County, was the longest suspension bridge in the world when it was finished in 1937. Today, it occupies the number two spot, taking a backseat to the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in New York City.
San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge Vista Points.
There are two very popular spots to view the Golden Gate Bridge. South Vista Point is on the San Francisco side where you can park your car. This is metered parking so you'll need plenty of change, even for a short stopover. Highlights include a breathtaking view, gift shop, café, and bridge exhibit. North Vista Point is on the Marin County side, whose views are no less stunning. Even better, you can park for free in the lot for up to four hours.
