San Francisco MOMA Media Arts


Since the 1970s, SFMOMA has been a leader in media art presentation. The eclectic collection includes video, film, slide, sound, computer-based, and online works. Reflecting the technological and conceptual advancements in art, the collection ranges from work by such pioneers as Vito Acconci, Dara Birnbaum, Peter Campus, and Steina Vasulka to more modern pieces by Eija-Lisa Ahtila, Matthew Barney, and Pierre Huyghe. San Francisco MOMA Photography.

Photographs have been exhibited at SFMOMA from day one. Its extensive collection features more than 14,000 pictures, many of which focus on California and the Western United States, the European Avant-Garde, and American Modernism. In addition, you'll discover a fine display of Japanese and landscape photography, as well as a burgeoning compilation of 19th-century works. Along with a plethora of special exhibitions, the museum puts together "Picturing Modernity: Selections from the SFMOMA Collection," an ongoing presentation that traces photography's change from a scientific invention into one of the modern era's most widespread, well-respected art forms. San Francisco MOMA Painting and Sculpture.

Enjoy more than 7,000 works of painting and sculpture that were created between 1900 and today. Modern movements represented including Fauvism, Cubism, Pop Art, and Minimalism. What's more, Abstract Expressionism, Conceptualism, German Expressionism, and the art of California have also found a home here. Artists whose work is prevalent range from Robert Rauschenberg, Clyfford Still, and Ellsworth Kelly to Sol LeWitt, Frank Stella, and Doris Salcedo. San Francisco MOMA Architecture & Design.

The Architecture & Design Department boasts both historical and contemporary works of architecture, furniture design, product design, and graphic design, along with artwork representative of these disciplines. Visitors will be introduced to such classics as the conference room from Charles and Ray Eames's design studio, furniture by the late Japanese designer Shiro Kuramata, and drawings and models by the experimental architect Lebbeus Woods.
